Log of Sea Wings
About Us
Lewis Everline, Skipper, (unless overruled)
Lynda Everline, Anchor Commander and Chief Second Guesser
We are two fifty somethings who have been fortunate enough to leave the rat race a little early. Lyn has retired from her career as a Medical Technologist and Lew claims to be too young to retire so tells everyone he is on a “sabbatical” from his career as an Architect.
We are both Penn State grads where we met and wed and have been married for 35 years this fall. We have two wonderful children now all grown up and married. While we have had other interests along the way (Lew got into sports car racing for a while) we have always had a boat since the first years of our marriage. Over the years we have owned a Laser 14, Coronado 15, S2 6.7, Capri 25, and Laser 28 before getting Sea Wings, our Beneteau Oceanis 461 in 2004.
Like many cruisers, we chartered for several years to make sure it was really what we wanted to do. Our chartering grounds of choice were the British Virgin Islands and we are looking forward to cruising those same waters again in Sea Wings.
In our early years of marriage we always thought it would be great to retire and cruise the world. But like many of us, that dream was forgotten as the realities of careers and raising children became the focus of our lives for many years. We became victims of the rat race and worked hard to acquire all of those symbols of ‘success’, the big house in the gated subdivision, circular drives for parking multiple German cars, a swimming pool, and a boat resting in your slip in your subdivision.
Fortunately we were able to refocus our lives and bring the dream of cruising back to life. And the best part of making the decision to really ‘do it’ was getting rid of all that ‘stuff’ that had seemed so important for so long. Gone are the big house, the cars, the pool, and everything else so that now we are full time cruisers and all our belongings are on the boat or in a 10 x 6 storage building.
We cast off our lines from Jacksonville, Florida on June 24, 2007 and headed north to the Chesapeake. Our plans are to cruise the Bahamas, Caribbean, Central America, Mexico and the south and eastern US coast for as long as we can stand it. We know there are many challenges ahead, not the least of which is the two of us living 24/7 in less than 400 square feet of living space. But we are (still) confident that the rewards will outweigh the challenges and we look forward to each new day on the water.
